Spelling Activities

·           Make the old tried and true flash cards.  The students need to be able to spell AND read the words.

·           Make an extra set of flash cards and play Concentration.  (Lay all the cards out face down and turn two over at a time and try to make a match.)

·           Try to build sentences that make sense with as many words as you can.

·           Make a second set of flash cards that have that week’s words spelled INCORRECTLY and have your child pick out the right way to spell it and explain how he or she knows which one is right and which one is wrong.  Pay attention to the ways your child may spell words incorrectly for ideas on how to write them on the “wrong” cards.  For example, your child may still want to spell “they” as “thay” or “tey”.  Put all three on a flash card and ask them which one is right and what is wrong with the other ones.

·           Circling or underlining the words in a magazine or newspaper is another idea.  I’ve found that letting the children use a high-lighter makes this more fun.

I’ll continue to add ideas as I find them or think of them.  If you have any ideas of what you do with your child, PLEASE, we’d all love for you to share them with us.  J
