Parents, these are the addition strategies we have been working on in class and the language we use. The following help us learn these strategies:
Objects we can hold, move, and count; Pictures; Number lines;
Games we play, such as “Tens Go Fish” and “Turn Over Ten”.
Adding Zero (+ 0)
6 + 0 = 6 0 + 4 = 4
0 + 24 = 24 58 + 0 = 58
“Zero can not change the other number.”
Counting On +1, +2, or +3
24 + 2 Say 24 and then count 2 MORE numbers.
“24, 25, 26” 26 is the answer.
Make 10
When adding 9 to another number, “steal” one from that number to make ten.
Example: 9 + 7 is the same as 10 + 6
When adding a string of numbers, first put together numbers that make ten. Example: 4 + 2 + 3 + 6 = ___
“4 + 6 = 10, 2 + 3 = 5
10 + 5 = 15
Doubles
1+1 = 2 2+2 = 4 3+3 = 6 4+4 = 8 5+5 = 10
6+6 = 12 7+7 = 14 8+8 = 16 9+9 = 18 10+10 = 20
Doubles plus One
If two numbers are next to each other on the number line they are called “neighbors”. These are the numbers to use the “Doubles plus one” strategy.
Example: 6 + 7 = _____ These two numbers are “neighbors”
7 is only one more than 6; therefore, 6 + 7 = 6 + 6 + 1
