Unit 1 Vocabulary

Here are the vocabulary words for Unit 1 in reading.  Students should be able to use each word in a sentence correctly and be able to identify what it means if it’s used in a sentence.  Remember that some words may have more than one meaning, even if not listed here.

 

deaf – not able to hear well, or at all

language – a set of signs, symbols, or movements to express

meaning

signing – 1. using sign language; making gestures that convey

information. 2. writing one’s name

cultures – ways of life, ideas, customs, and traditions

relatives – members of your family

celebrate – to do something

safe – not in danger

flames – the hot, bright gases given off by a fire

tell – to give information

forest – land covered with trees, thick woods

heat – great warmth or high temperature

wonderful – very good

share – to give parts of what one person has to others

company – a friend or friends; guests

delighted – very pleased

thinning – making or becoming thin

enjoyed – got joy or pleasure from; was happy with

settled – to have made a new home

wrinkled – made folds or lines on a smooth surface

practiced – did something over and over again to be good at it

cuddle – to hold close in one’s arms

favorite – a person or thing liked best

patient – able to wait or put up with something difficult without

          getting upset

tomorrow – the day after today

different – unlike, not the same

groan – to make a deep, unhappy sound

excited – thrilled, happy about something

carefully – using care, thinking about what you’re doing

whisper – to speak very softly
